"Before America, there was Gran Canaria — the last European water the caravels would taste for many weeks."

— On the 1492 stopover of Christopher Columbus

Das Erlebnis

Vegueta, the cradle of the Atlantic

The oldest quarter of Las Palmas is a maze of cobbled lanes, carved balconies and shaded patios. Behind the façade of a colonial mansion, a navigator once repaired his ships and gathered the last supplies before sailing into the unknown. In this game the whole quarter — the cathedral, the merchant houses, the hermitages — becomes the board on which you retrace his route.

Wahre Geschichte

The port that launched a new world

Founded in 1478, Las Palmas was the first European city in the Canaries — a fortified outpost that became a bridge between three continents.

In 1492 Columbus stopped in Gran Canaria to repair the rudder of the Pinta and re-rig the Niña before continuing west. The houses, wells and churches of Vegueta witnessed those frantic weeks.

Five centuries later the quarter remains almost untouched: a UNESCO-listed open-air museum where every balcony and coat of arms still tells the story of the Atlantic crossing.

Die Route

4 Stationen. Ein Geheimnis.

Akt 1

Plaza de Santa Ana

The cathedral square

Beneath the bronze dogs that gave the islands their name, the first clue hides in the façade of the Cathedral of Santa Ana.

Akt 2

Casa de Colón

The governor's house

In the patio where the navigator is said to have lodged, decode the log-book entry that points to his next move.

Akt 3

Ermita de San Antonio Abad

The oldest chapel

Tradition says Columbus prayed here before departure. A carved date holds the combination you need.

Akt 4

Calle de los Balcones

Street of carved balconies

The final riddle is spread across the Canary-pine balconies. Read them in the right order and the secret is yours.
