The island before the conquest
The Guanche Traces
Long before Europe arrived, a people watched the Atlantic from these cliffs. Their script is still here — if you know where to look.
"They had no metal and no sails, yet they raised a civilisation on rock that the conquerors could not erase."

True history
A people written in stone
The first Canarians probably arrived from North Africa around two thousand years ago, bringing barley, goats and a Libyco-Berber script.
They built painted granaries, carved spirals into cliff walls and mummified their dead — a world the Castilian conquest of 1478–1483 swept away within a generation.
Today El Museo Canario in Vegueta guards their skulls, idols and pintaderas, while their place-names still cling to every ravine of the island.
