A capital that hid from the sea
Teguise was founded in the 15th century by the Norman conquerors and named after a princess of the native Majos people.
Built far from the coast, it still suffered terrible raids — Berber and pirate fleets stormed the town and dragged hundreds into slavery, leaving the lane known as the Callejón de la Sangre.
Watched over by the castle of Santa Bárbara on its volcano, Teguise stayed the island capital until 1852, and remains the best-preserved historic town in Lanzarote.
