True history
The artist who shaped an island
Between 1730 and 1736 the volcanoes of Timanfaya buried a quarter of Lanzarote under fire, creating the lunar badlands the island is famous for.
Two centuries later the painter César Manrique returned from New York determined to save his home from mass tourism. He banned billboards and high-rises and turned lava tubes, craters and cliffs into living art.
His foundation at Tahíche, the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río remain the soul of Lanzarote — proof that an island can grow without losing itself.
