The experience

The first capital of the Canaries

Tucked into a green volcanic valley to shelter from pirates, Betancuria was the very first European capital of the archipelago. Its church, convent ruins and silent lanes still breathe the year 1402. This game leads you through the cradle of the conquest, on the trail of the Norman who started it all.

True history

A Norman king in the Atlantic

In 1402 the Norman lord Jean de Béthencourt and the Gascon Gadifer de la Salle landed on Fuerteventura to conquer it in the name of Castile.

They founded Betancuria deep in the hills, raised a chapel and a fort, and slowly subdued the native Majos who had lived on the island for centuries.

From this small valley the campaign spread across the whole archipelago — the beginning of the long, hard conquest of the Canaries that would end only in 1496.
