Tenerife is famous for one thing above all: it is warm all year. Sitting off the coast of Africa, the "island of eternal spring" rarely drops below 20°C by day in the south, even in midwinter. That makes the best time to visit Tenerife less about chasing sun and more about what you want from the trip — and how much you want to pay.
Winter (December to February) is peak season for a reason. While northern Europe freezes, the south of Tenerife sits around 21–23°C with plenty of sunshine. It is the busiest and priciest stretch, especially over Christmas and New Year, so book flights and activities early. The sea is cooler but very swimmable, and whale watching runs all winter.
Spring (March to May) is arguably the sweet spot. The weather is warm and stable, the island is green after the winter rains, prices ease off outside Easter, and the hiking is superb — the Teide National Park and the Anaga and Masca trails are at their best before the summer heat. A Mount Teide cable car trip is unmissable in clear spring air.
Summer (June to August) is hot, dry and lively. The south can hit the low 30s, the resorts are buzzing, and it is prime time for the water — boat parties, jet ski and long beach days. It is also the big season for stag and hen groups; if that is you, our stag & hen page has the group activities sorted. Do the serious hiking early in the morning to beat the heat.
Autumn (September to November) is an underrated gem. The sea is at its warmest after the summer, the crowds thin out, prices drop, and temperatures stay in the mid-to-high 20s. If you want summer warmth without summer prices or crowds, this is the window.
Two dates worth planning around. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (February) is one of the largest carnivals in the world — spectacular, but book accommodation months ahead. And whale and dolphin watching is genuinely year-round here, so you never have to time the trip around it.
Whatever month you choose, Tenerife delivers. And because the weather is so dependable, you can plan outdoor days with confidence — with a self-guided outdoor escape game as a fun back-up for the rare grey afternoon or a lively evening. See the full range on our things to do in Tenerife page.
