Anaga Rural Park: Tenerife's Ancient Laurel Forest

Fun Zone TenerifeOctober 10, 20267 min read

If Mount Teide is Tenerife at its most dramatic, the Anaga Rural Park is Tenerife at its most magical. Tucked into the island's north-east corner, Anaga is a maze of knife-edge ridges, deep valleys and a prehistoric laurel forest (laurisilva) that once covered much of southern Europe. UNESCO named it a Biosphere Reserve, and it feels a world away from the beaches of the south.

The star of the park is the laurel forest itself — a damp, moss-draped cloud forest that survives on the moisture carried in by the trade winds. Walking the Sendero de los Sentidos (Path of the Senses) near Cruz del Carmen is the easiest way to experience it: a gentle, well-marked loop through gnarled, ancient trees that feel almost primeval. On a misty morning it is genuinely atmospheric.

Beyond the forest, Anaga rewards those who go further. Narrow roads wind out to tiny hamlets like Chamorga and Taganana, and footpaths drop down to wild black-sand beaches such as Benijo and Almáciga — spectacular for photos and sunsets, though the Atlantic here is powerful and not always safe for swimming. The hike from El Bailadero out to the Faro de Anaga lighthouse is one of the island's great walks.

Practical notes: Anaga is cooler, wetter and cloudier than the south, so bring a layer and decent shoes, and don't expect all-day sunshine — the mist is part of the experience. The roads are narrow and winding, so allow plenty of time, and start from La Laguna, which pairs well with a visit to its UNESCO old town. A guided walk is worth considering if you want the history and botany explained.

Anaga makes a perfect contrast day to a beach-and-sun week. Spend the morning in the forest, the afternoon on a northern beach, then head back south — where a self-guided outdoor escape game is a great way to round off the day. See how it all fits together on our things to do in Tenerife page.
